About Us

The Sydney Bee Club was established by Vicky Brown, Elke Haege and Doug Purdie. It was formed to promote urban beekeeping in Sydney. Vicky and Doug, who are highly experienced beekeepers, now run a beekeeping supply shop in Matraville, The Urban Beehive, a partner of the Sydney Bee Club.

Our club has grown since its inauguration in 2012 and we now have
nearly 200 members, many of whom are urban beekeepers. The club is dedicated to sharing the knowledge and skills necessary to become a successful beekeeper. Our role is to ensure good beekeeping practices and to promote our biosecurity and Department of Primary Industry (DPI) obligations. We collaborate with local communities through eco events, fairs, farmers markets and commercial organisations (such as Bunnings) where we disseminate advice and information about bees and beekeeping.

Our apiary officer is an ambassador of the
Wheen Bee Foundation. The Wheen Bee Foundation is Australia’s only registered not-for-profit charity that promotes awareness of the importance of bees for food security, and raises funds for research that addresses the national and global threats to bees.

Whether you want to keep bees to provide you with honey, to pollinate your garden, because you have a passion for bees or you would just like to support our work, come along to one of our meetings. We invite interesting guest speakers and there are plenty of opportunities to have your questions answered. We also hold monthly field days at our apiary on Randwick and you are welcome to come along to get first-hand experience of managing bees before deciding to get your own hive. See Eventbrite for details and to make a reservation.
